Listening to local farmers
Conservatives address concerns of agricultural industry

Speaking after one of her regular visits to Thainstone and Huntly Marts, Gordon
Conservatives’ Nanette Milne said “It is clear that Scottish farmers have had a raw deal in recent years. Every time I visit the mart someone tells me of a problem with bureaucracy or form-filling, or of difficulty in competing with inferior or badly labelled food imports.”

To address the concerns of the agricultural industry, Scottish
Conservatives will:

  • Support reform of the CAP, in the interests of farmers and consumers;
  • Exert pressure on the Westminster Government to ensure meaningful import controls are in place;
  • Ensure “honesty in labelling” by requiring country of origin and method of production of main ingredients to be stated on the label of all food products;
  • Instigate a thorough review of regulations with a view to reducing the bureaucratic burden currently borne by the industry. For instance, we will look to replace the 20 day rule on animal movement with a more practical alternative.
